That nighttime itching on the lower legs could actually be related to kidney disease rather than bug bites! Kidney disease can cause a crawling or prickling sensation under the skin that feels a lot like bug bites — and it often gets worse at night.

This is called uremic pruritus (or CKD-associated pruritus), and it happens when the kidneys can't fully filter out toxins and waste, leading to a buildup that irritates the skin and nerves. Here are some things that may help with the nighttime itching:

- Moisturize regularly — use thick creams or emollients, especially right after a shower
- Avoid hot showers — hot water can make itching worse
- Cool compresses — applying something cool to the legs at night can soothe the itch
- Antihistamines — some, like loratadine (Claritin), can be used during the day; others may cause drowsiness and could help at night
- Prescription options — nerve pain medications or other treatments may be available if over-the-counter options don't help

It's really worth mentioning this to a nephrologist or dermatologist, especially since it's happening at night and feels like bites. They can help figure out the exact cause and the best treatment plan.

My nephrologist said my itching wasn’t from CKD. My primary prescribed for me. I also went to a dermatologist. I am now on Dupixent for eczema and that has helped the mysterious rash and itch. When I do itch, I get an over the counter anti itch lotion that helps a lot! I hope your doctor is more responsive.

Darcy, Just read about your itching at night. I experience that as well. It is usually the calf and ankle and I use what I call my itch cream that stops it right away. It is a prescription for psoriasis that flares up on my husbands knee often . It takes just a tiny smear and stops the itch in about 5 minutes. IM not sure if I can recommend the name of the medicine here in this forum but ask your doctor to give you something. There may be something better than what I use. Make a list for questions.....if you are like me I srart talking and forget to ask my most important questions at the doctor's visit.

Darcy, And everyone instead of a script for ich cream get Hydrocortisone cream either at Walmart or better yet check your over-the-counter at your Medicare insurance company. You get it for free.
