Do you need a medical bracelet for chronic kidney disease (CKD)?

While there's no universal rule that everyone with CKD must wear a medical bracelet, it can be a really smart idea depending on your situation. Think of it as a silent advocate when you can't speak for yourself!

Here are some situations where a medical bracelet could be especially helpful:

- Medications to avoid — Some common pain relievers, like NSAIDs, can be harmful to kidneys. A bracelet can alert emergency responders to avoid these.
- Dialysis access — If you're on dialysis and have a fistula or graft, a bracelet can warn medical staff not to use that arm for blood draws or blood pressure checks.
- Kidney transplant — If you've had a transplant and take immunosuppressant medications, emergency teams need to know this.
- High potassium (hyperkalemia) — This is common with CKD and can affect your heart, so alerting responders quickly matters.

It's always worth discussing with your nephrologist whether a medical bracelet makes sense for your specific situation and what information it should include.

Hi Darcy!! They make medical alert jewelry now specifically for CKD. I found a really nice bracelet. I figured it is better to be safe than sorry. I had an EMT compliment me on it. I would rather have my diagnosis known than not. The one I found, I found it on Facebook and was really reasonable.

Darcy, I am going to order a medical bracelet for myself. I recently had a UTI and my pcp was unavailable so I saw another doctor in the same practice. That doctor prescribed a strong antibiotic that I had taken before for a UTI but for a lesser time and a lesser dosage. I called the practice when I got the script and they said " Oh NO, cut those pills in half and take only three days. So the doctor I had seen did not even review my chart. If I was wearing a med alert braclet it would maybe have reminded her to look at my records. Anyway I am ordering a bracelet. A totally different question.............Does anyone here know for how long the arm can be used for BP and blood draws after having lymph nodes removed due to breast cancer I had breast cancer in 2000 and have not allowed my arm to be used for BP checks or blood draws. Someone told me that it would be safe after 10 years. I sure do not want to add lymphodema to my woes.

I have not thought about the need for a medical bracelet before, but having one to keep medical people aware of it sounds like a great idea to me!

It’s not a bad idea. I use RoadID (www.roadid.com) since I am endurance sport athlete. You can have things just listed on the metal plate of the bracelet or have a plate with an online access code on the back that medics can get medical information online. I use the online version so that I can update my med changes.

Hope this helps!
