Eye symptoms like blurry vision and irritation are real concerns for those on dialysis with high blood pressure. Here's a breakdown of what may be causing them and how to find relief.

Why This Happens

Kidney disease and dialysis can contribute to eye issues in a few ways:

- Fluid buildup from poor kidney function can cause puffiness and pressure around the eyes
- High blood pressure can suddenly cause blurry vision — this is a warning sign to take seriously
- Reduced tear production and changes in tear composition can lead to dry, irritated eyes
- Calcium and phosphate buildup in the blood can deposit in the eyes, causing irritation OTC Relief Options

- Lubricating eye drops can soothe dry, gritty, irritated eyes
- A cool compress around the eyes can temporarily ease puffiness

Prescription & Medical Options

- Managing blood pressure and kidney disease directly can reduce eye-related symptoms
- Controlling calcium and phosphate levels through medication may help prevent eye irritation
- Adjusting dialysis treatment (such as switching to nighttime dialysis) can help reduce fluid overload, which may ease eye puffiness

When To Seek Urgent Help

Sudden blurry vision, flashes of light, dark floaters, or loss of side vision are serious warning signs. These need prompt medical attention — don't wait on those.

Regular eye exams are strongly recommended to catch any changes early, especially while on dialysis.
