Patrick Lett, MD (co-morbidities CKD IV and Parkinson’s Stage 4). I’m bedridden 6-8 weeks, with physical therapy 5 x week. I was trying to research supplements for optimum healing. Pain Rx are Butrans Patch 15 mg 1 x week, and Percocet 7.5 mg
every 6 hours. Thank you.

My suggestion/opinion, take it or leave it - Spend the time you had planned to find some supplements by clearing your mind and head of all the noise going on in there. Your body needs REST. There are very few supplements that are good for damaged kidneys. The TEAM here posted an article on supplements that are good for CKD. So your problem is resolved. At this point, your health and body are screaming at you to slow down and rest.

What supplements might support healing for someone with CKD Stage IV who is bedridden after a serious fracture?

First, it's so important to say — that sounds like an incredibly painful and frightening experience. Wishing a steady and supported recovery ahead.

With CKD Stage IV, the kidneys are significantly reduced in function, which means supplements that seem harmless can actually build up in the blood or interfere with medications like Butrans or Percocet. A few supplements that *may* support healing and are sometimes considered safer with kidney disease (always with a doctor's approval) include:

- Omega-3 fatty acids — may help reduce inflammation and support kidney function, though more research is needed
- Probiotics — may support gut health and help reduce waste buildup in the blood
- B vitamins — support energy and metabolism, but dosing must be carefully monitored in CKD
- CoQ10 — may help reduce oxidative stress, though evidence is mixed

These are not automatic green lights — they are starting points for a conversation with your nephrologist or care team. There are also some important things to avoid with CKD Stage IV:

- NSAIDs (like ibuprofen or naproxen) — can reduce blood flow to the kidneys and worsen function
- High-dose turmeric — can actually damage kidneys at large amounts
- Protein supplements or powders — too much protein forces kidneys to work harder and causes waste buildup
- St. John's Wort — can interfere with many medications

Given the current pain medications being taken, supplement interactions are a real concern. Even "natural" products can affect how Butrans or Percocet work in the body. The safest step is to bring a list of any supplements being considered to the nephrologist and the prescribing doctor before starting anything. A pharmacist who specializes in kidney disease can also be a great resource for checking interactions.

Healing takes time, especially under these circumstances — but having the right team involved in every decision makes a real difference.
