What will a doctor do for stage 3 kidney disease? Great question — and the good news is that stage 3 is a point where taking action can really make a difference!

At stage 3, the kidneys are moderately damaged but still working. A doctor's main goal is to slow progression and protect remaining kidney function. Here's what to generally expect: Tests and Monitoring
- Regular blood tests to check eGFR (how well kidneys filter waste)
- Urine tests to check for protein leakage
- Possibly imaging or a kidney biopsy depending on the situation

Lifestyle Guidance
- A kidney-friendly diet — a referral to a registered dietitian is really helpful here
- Quitting smoking if applicable, as it worsens kidney damage
- Limiting alcohol, which can raise blood pressure and interfere with medications
- Maintaining a healthy body weight

Medications
- Managing blood pressure closely, as high blood pressure is especially risky with kidney disease
- Controlling other comorbidities that could speed up kidney damage

The encouraging news is that with proper management at stage 3, it's possible to keep the disease stable and prevent it from progressing further. One MyKidneyDiseaseTeam member shared that they were diagnosed in 2015 with stage 3 CKD and have been able to keep it stable by watching it diligently.

Always follow your doctor's personalized plan — they know your specific situation best!

It depends on your individual situation and your doctor. Until you need to have dialyses, it doesn't seem like the docrtors do much. Until then, they monitor your labs and try to keep your body stable and prevent it from getting worse.

Your doctor should refer you to an nephrologist. You need to interact strongly with your doctor as he/she is the primary key to managing your CKD. A nephrologist will help manage it perhaps by giving you Farxiga to remove sugar from your blood. But other than that, they don’t seem to do much until you need dialysis.
You really have to stay on top of things yourself.
I now have coronary artery disease due to the fact that no one told me it’s a progression from CKD. So now I have an internal medicine doctor, and a cardiologist as well. So you really have to probe these things. Do tons of research on reputable websites, like kidney foundations, Mayo Clinic, Cleveland clinic, and so on. Biggest thing that helps me is limiting protein, intake, no sodium, staying away from red meat, eating smaller meals, drinking enough water, but not too much. Watch your consumption of nuts. Some are high in potassium (in case your potassium is high). Macadamia nuts are best for kidneys .
Be careful of the hordes of “snake oil sales”. There are many.
Check with your doctors before taking anything.
