Itching is actually a really common experience with kidney disease — so you're definitely not alone in this! It even has its own name: CKD-associated pruritus (CKD-aP).
The main reason it happens is that when kidneys aren't filtering properly, toxins and waste build up in the blood. This buildup can trigger itching throughout the body. Other substances that can accumulate and make things worse include:
- Parathyroid hormone
- Calcium
- Magnesium
- Phosphate
These can cause inflammation, nerve changes, and immune system imbalances — all of which can contribute to that maddening itch. The itching can feel like a crawling or prickling sensation under the skin, and it tends to come and go. It's often worse at night or on hot days, which makes rest really difficult.
It's worth noting that if you're on hemodialysis, itching is especially common — around 70% of people on hemodialysis experience it.
There are both medical treatments and home care options available, so it's a great idea to bring this up with your nephrologist. They can help figure out the right approach for you.
