Hello my kidney warrior. From all the info I've read, you need to avoid potassium, sodium, and anything that has "phos" in it (at all cost.) They are NOT your friends. Just like the devil they only want to steal, kill and destroy. You must read your labels to find these hidden killers of your kidneys. They can take your life and your livelihood. Initially it was hard and frustrating for me. I only ate fish, grits, toast chicken breast
I'd never been a big veggie person but I forced myself. My canned veggies I would rinse them before eating. I started this "eating right" journey when I was Stage 5/eGFR of 10 (dialysis bound.) I was set up for access port placement on 9/14. I went to ER about 2 weeks before my placement appt. because I had swelling in my thigh and upper arm. I learned then that my eGFR was a 24 and that put me at stage 4. Kidney Dr said anything above 20 would keep me off dialysis. 2/3 months later I'm still 24. Nutritionist called me this week and told me I could resume regular foods but to be mindful of sodium. I Google EVERYTHING that I think about eating to see if it's CKD friendly. I read the labels of everything I consume. Supposedly anything is good in moderation. I had to substitute πŸ§‚ salt with lemon juice and dill weed. I've got a shaker that I mix garlic and onion powder, smoked paprika, Mrs. Dash products, black pepper and a pinch of "Slap yo mama seasoning) in it. I use this on everything.

Great question! Managing what you eat is one of the most important things you can do for your kidney health. While everyone's needs are a little different depending on their stage of kidney disease, there are some common foods and nutrients to be mindful of.

Here are the key things many people with kidney disease are advised to limit or avoid:

- High-sodium foods β€” processed foods, fast food, canned soups, hot dogs, and bacon
- High-potassium foods β€” bananas, avocados, potatoes, beans, and leafy greens
- High-phosphorus foods β€” most dairy products, dark colas, chocolate, whole grains, and some nuts and seeds
- Excess protein β€” red meat, poultry, and fish in large portions can put extra strain on the kidneys
- Saturated fats β€” found in red meat and butter, these can be harmful over time
- Sugary foods and drinks β€” can contribute to weight gain and other complications
- Excess fluids β€” depending on your stage, fluid intake may need to be monitored It's worth noting that not everyone with kidney disease needs to avoid all of these things equally. Your specific restrictions depend on your kidney function, lab results, and treatment plan.

Working with a nephrologist and a renal dietitian is the best way to get a personalized plan that works for you. They can help make sure you're not over-restricting unnecessarily, which is just as important as avoiding the wrong foods.

I have learned with my kidney disease any colored liquids is not good for the kidneys. I was a Pepsi-a-holic. Now I only drink 7 up and Sprite in moderation. I read all nutrition labels. I avoid any and everything that has potassium, sodium and anything "phos" I try to stay hydrated so kidneys don't hurt. I was Stage 5 CKD with egfr of 10 and dialysis bound. I am now Stage 4 with egfr of 24. Im really trying everything possible to stay out of that dialysis chair.
