What are the complications of a kidney biopsy when there's a growth on the kidney? That's a really important question to think through before the procedure.

A kidney biopsy is generally considered a relatively straightforward procedure, but like any medical procedure, it does carry some risks. When a growth (like a tumor or mass) is involved, the doctor will use imaging guidance (ultrasound or CT scan) to carefully target the right area. General risks to be aware of include:

- Excess bleeding — the biggest risk, especially if a blood vessel is nicked during the procedure
- Infection — a small but real risk after the procedure
- Urinary retention — difficulty peeing after the biopsy
- Urinary tract infection
- Inconclusive results — sometimes the sample doesn't give a clear answer

When a growth is present, imaging guidance becomes especially important to safely collect tissue from that specific area. Always flag any unusual symptoms to your doctor right away after the procedure.
