Yes, some kidney cysts can potentially become cancerous, though most kidney cysts are benign (non-cancerous). Kidney cysts are generally classified into categories based on their appearance and characteristics, which helps doctors determine the level of risk.
Here's what's generally known:
- Simple cysts are the most common and are almost always harmless
- Complex cysts have irregular features (like thick walls or internal divisions) and carry a higher risk of being or becoming cancerous
- Regular monitoring through imaging (like ultrasound or CT scans) helps track any changes over time
The fact that your nephrologist wants to monitor them is a very proactive and positive step. Catching any changes early makes a big difference in outcomes.
It's worth asking your nephrologist which type of cysts you have and what the monitoring schedule will look like. That way you'll know exactly what to expect and when.

Darcy, Like you I have a kidney cyst to watch. Just had an ultrasound and they graded it as a Bosnick 2F. Means its could be more serious and needs watching. I see the nephrologist on the 18th ( next week ) and he will give me more information am sure. I will post to you again after that appointment. My right kidney has shrunk so guess my left kidney is doing all the work.
