My nephrologist ordered a full urinalysis and renal panel along with CBC w/o Differential which is done every 3 months because I’ve developed kidney-related complications: elevated potassium and calcium (also dangerous for the heart, especially those of us with CHF), iron and vitamin D deficiency leading to anemia and bone loss (recently diagnosed with osteoporosis after being active, fit and thin for over 73 years). I recently developed secondary hyperparathyroidism which causes many unpleasant symptoms (very dry, flaky skin with occasional itching, extreme exhaustion, weakness, bone loss, high calcium).
My intention is not to scare you but to let you know we don’t all develop the same issues so there’s no one size fits all with respect to diet and treatment. We all need to keep hydrated and exercise.
Herbs and supplements are not regulated by the FDA so make sure you consult with your doctor first. There can be dangerous drug interactions or are contraindicated for kidney disease or require dosage adjustments. Kidney disease is incurable but can be stabilized. I waver between stages 3A and B.
I hope this helps. If you scroll below, you will find many helpful articles, recipes, and other resources.
Take care and be well. Judi in RVA

Great question! Beyond blood and urine tests, there are a few other important checks that may be done at stage 3a CKD to get a fuller picture of kidney health.

Here's what to expect:

- Blood pressure check — High blood pressure is closely linked to kidney health, so monitoring it regularly is key
- Physical exam — Your doctor Show Full Answer

Great question! Beyond blood and urine tests, there are a few other important checks that may be done at stage 3a CKD to get a fuller picture of kidney health.

Here's what to expect:

- Blood pressure check — High blood pressure is closely linked to kidney health, so monitoring it regularly is key
- Physical exam — Your doctor will look for swelling (edema) in your face, hands, or feet, which can signal fluid buildup
- Kidney biopsy — If your doctor suspects a specific underlying cause, a small tissue sample may be taken from the kidney to examine under a microscope
- Imaging tests — Ultrasounds or other scans may be used to check the size and structure of your kidneys

Your doctor may not order all of these at once — it really depends on your symptoms and how your results are trending over time. The most important thing to remember is that no single test tells the whole story. Your care team looks at everything together — test trends, symptoms, and how you're feeling — to make the best decisions for your care. Staying on top of regular appointments makes a big difference at this stage!
