Hi my name is Teri and I have stage three ckd. I’ve had cysts on my kidneys for years and recently one has turned into a tumor. I’m having a partial nephrectomy in a month. Has anyone else had this surgery before?

What a journey — dealing with cysts for years and now facing surgery takes real courage. A partial nephrectomy (where only the affected part of the kidney is removed) is actually considered a kidney-preserving approach, which is especially important with stage 3 CKD since protecting as much kidney function as possible matters a lot.

Many people in the MyKidneyDiseaseTeam community have shared experiences with kidney surgeries and navigating life with stage 3 CKD. One MyKidneyDiseaseTeam member shared that after their diagnosis, they watched their kidney health diligently and were able to keep it stable — which is encouraging going into a procedure designed to protect your remaining kidney tissue. Here are some things worth keeping in mind as you prepare:

- Talk to your nephrologist about how the surgery may affect your eGFR (the measure of how well your kidneys filter waste)
- Ask about post-surgery dietary adjustments — kidney-friendly eating may need to be revisited after the procedure
- Discuss medications — some may need to be adjusted around surgery time
- Prepare for recovery — fatigue is common, so having support at home helps

Posting your experience on your Activities page could connect you with others who've been through something similar. You're definitely not alone in this! 💙
