A MyKidneyDiseaseTeam Member asked a question 💭

I have stage three ckd. I’ve had cysts on my kidneys for a long time now one has changed. I was originally going to have it removed now the doctors office called and he wants to do a partial nephrectomy. I don’t know why. I have to go in to see the doctor in two weeks. So I have to wait. It’s hard to wait and not have any answers. I’m scared. Has anyone else had this procedure?

A partial nephrectomy means the surgeon removes only the affected part of the kidney rather than the whole thing. With stage 3 CKD, preserving as much healthy kidney tissue as possible is really important, which is likely why your doctor shifted to this approach. It's actually considered a kidney-protective decision. To make the most of your upcoming appointment, it may help to write down your questions ahead of time. Here are some worth asking:

- Why was the plan changed to a partial nephrectomy?
- How will this affect my stage 3 CKD going forward?
- What does recovery look like?
- How will my kidney function be monitored after surgery?

Many MyKidneyDiseaseTeam members have found that building a strong relationship with their care team — and asking lots of questions — makes a big difference in feeling more in control.

Hang in there. Two weeks feels long, but going in prepared will help you feel much less in the dark. 💙
