I (40 female) was diagnosed with mid-level CKD 3a about 10 years ago. After I got pregnant, my numbers improved to upper 3a, but now have gone back down. Healthy weight, no diabetes, was only checking creatinine bloodwork annually.

After bouncing around between insurance providers for work, I’m trying to get re-established at a nephrologist and the last one denied me without even looking at the referral. It feels like this is the time to really try to work to prevent further progression, but… read more

Hello! I am Stage 3B. Right now I am dealing with anemia and fluid retention. I hate both of them!

Hi I'm CKD stage 3A. I found a patient advocate that has done all the foot work for me through Solace. There are others but they took Medicare and I'm so happy l found them. They found me a PCP in my area and a Nepherologists in the same building among many other things.

How can you manage CKD 3a and get established with a nephrologist?

It's frustrating when getting specialist care feels like an uphill battle, especially when you're trying to be proactive. You're absolutely right that stage 3a is an important time to focus on slowing progression.

Getting Nephrologist Care:

Keep advocating for yourself. Consider asking your primary care provider to:
- Include specific lab values (eGFR, creatinine, protein in urine) in the referral
- Emphasize the 10-year history and recent decline in kidney function
- Try different nephrology practices if one denies you

Your primary care provider can manage much of your care at this stage, which is helpful while you continue seeking a specialist.

Managing Your Kidney Health:

Several lifestyle changes can help slow progression:

- Follow a kidney-friendly diet (your doctor can provide specific guidance on protein intake based on your labs)
- Exercise regularly to maintain heart health and bone strength
- Avoid smoking and limit alcohol
- Monitor blood pressure closely

About Exercise and Protein:

Exercise is beneficial for bone and heart health with CKD. Regarding protein concerns, it's best to discuss your specific needs with your doctor based on your current kidney function and activity level. They can help you find the right balance.

Important Tests to Track:

Beyond annual creatinine, ask your doctor about monitoring:
- eGFR (estimated glomerular filtration rate)
- Urine protein or albumin levels
- Blood pressure
- Electrolyte levels

Perimenopause Considerations:

Hormonal changes during perimenopause can affect kidney disease, so keeping your healthcare team informed about symptoms is important.

A MyKidneyDiseaseTeam member shared: "I was diagnosed in 2015 with stage 3 chronic kidney disease (CKD). I have watched it diligently since then and have been able to keep it stable." This shows that careful monitoring and management can help maintain kidney function.

Don't give up on finding a nephrologist, but know that with your primary care provider's support and healthy lifestyle choices, you're taking important steps to protect your kidney health.
