I had cut out several things based on research and this site. She told me I didn't have to cut anything out other than dairy because I wasn't on dialysis. Give me a break! She's sending me some written info.

I'm waiting to receive this info before I make a final decision, but I have absolutely no confidence in her so far.

My doctor referred me to her so I don't know where I could go to get better information. I need someone who can look at my total medical condition and give me personal… read more

Members rallied around someone frustrated by conflicting dietary advice from a renal dietitian who claimed only dairy needed to be eliminated at stage 3A, offering validation that seeking a second opinion was the right call. Several members shared their own experiences with unhelpful specialists and emphasized the importance of finding a highly rated nephrologist, often through referrals from urology institutes, while also recommending trusted resources like the National Kidney Foundation, DaVita, and Renal Diet HQ for reliable kidney diet information. A recurring theme was the value of self-advocacy, reading labels carefully, and recognizing that while general guidance exists, each person's kidney disease journey requires personalized medical advice tailored to their unique health conditions and stage.

Wow, that is strange. I am literally walking around the grocery store with a magnifying glass so I can read labels and compare things. It's enough to drive you nuts. That is s trip that a nephrology team would tell you to eat anything you want except dairy. That would be great. I'm also 3a. Hmmmmm.

With what research I've done and from what my nephrologiest told me. I'm in stage 4 kidney failure with 20% kidney function. They say anything with low sodium or no salt at all. Low protein plenty of water. I'm still new to all of this myself. But still listen to what your nephrologiest says and suggest.

My Nephrologist did not restrict my diet. I think he was happy I ate given all the medical issues I have to deal with throughout my life. I had to go on a very restrictive fat diet about 40 years ago to try to keep my fat levels down. Unfortunately, even after years of no to low fat foods, I was never able to keep my fat levels within normal range. I finally went to a Cardiologist and he quickly determined I was one of those few people who is genetically unable to process fats. He put me on a differnt medication and for the first time in my life my blood fats fall within normal ranges.

I am a firm believer in moderation in all things, including diet. Each person's situation will dictate what they can and can not eat. Finding conflicting information between doctors is not uncommon. Despite what is written here, nobody will really know another person's circumstances. What works for one person may not work for another!

I was frustrated with my kidney specialist & was stage 3b at the time. They told me to just follow a heart healthy diet. Because I had been getting info from the National Kidney Foundation, Davita, Renal Diet HQ as well as other reliable sites, I knew what they were telling me wasn't right. I finally saw a nephrologist a little farther away and what a difference. She changed my BP meds to one that's easier on the kidneys and she told me that I'm currently stage 4. Her recommendation was to go on a plant based diet with very little meat. It hasn't been easy, but I want to put off dialysis as long as I can.
