Moving from Stage 3A to Stage 4 CKD means your kidneys are working less efficiently than before. At Stage 4, kidney function has dropped to between 15–29%, which is considered severely reduced. It's a significant milestone, but it doesn't mean kidney failure is immediate. At this stage, doctors typically focus on a few key things:

- Slowing progression to prevent or delay kidney failure
- Managing blood pressure, which is especially important as high blood pressure can cause further kidney damage
- Monitoring for complications like anemia, bone disease, and fluid buildup
- Planning ahead — your doctor may begin discussing future treatment options like dialysis or a kidney transplant

This is also a time when diet and lifestyle changes become even more important. Working closely with a kidney dietitian can make a real difference in managing symptoms and protecting what kidney function remains.

The most important step right now is staying in close contact with your nephrologist (kidney specialist) and asking questions — just like you're doing now. You're not alone in this.
