I'm at stage 3a CKD and right now my results are okay, but I'm just wondering about that. I'm assuming when and if I come to that point my doctors will let me know.

Thank you CynthiaCieutat for that. I already do a drink of lemon, cucumber, ginger and mint, which I love.

It depends on your Nephrologist.  According to my understanding of this disease, the kidney transplant occurs at Stage 5.  The doctors have a lot to consider before a transplant may occur and there is a really long waiting list for a transplant.  It is also my understanding that it can take a lot to get the transplant.   You might want to get a general idea of what the process entails.   That way if you may need a transplant you can make any life changes possible now to get your body, financial preparations, etc.,  in order to improve your chances of getting one, should you need a transplant in the future.  In my situation, I doubt I could ever qualify for a transplant because I have an autoimmune disease that would most likely prevent me from having a transplant.  I anticipate I could most likely qualify because my husband and I have many other pluses that would increase my chances.  You just never know how things would end up.  Age, body health, anSent from my iPhone

Drinking lemon water helps clean your kidneys as well as eating parsley.

Great question to be thinking ahead about! At stage 3a, a transplant isn't on the immediate horizon — that's more of a stage 5 conversation, when the kidneys are at or near failure (eGFR below 15). At that point, dialysis or a transplant become necessary.

That said, transplant discussions often begin at stage 4 (eGFR 15–29) Show Full Answer

Great question to be thinking ahead about! At stage 3a, a transplant isn't on the immediate horizon — that's more of a stage 5 conversation, when the kidneys are at or near failure (eGFR below 15). At that point, dialysis or a transplant become necessary.

That said, transplant discussions often begin at stage 4 (eGFR 15–29), so there's time to prepare mentally and practically before reaching that point. Your instinct to trust your care team is a good one, but being proactive never hurts! Here are a few things worth keeping in mind as things progress:

- Stage 3a — Focus is on slowing progression through diet, lifestyle, and monitoring
- Stage 4 — Time to start having transplant conversations with your nephrologist
- Stage 5 — Dialysis or transplant become necessary treatments

The transplant evaluation process can take months or even years, so starting those conversations early at stage 4 gives more time to navigate the steps involved.

I have had kidney disease for many years. The need for a transplate seems to always be in the back of my mind. My philosophy is to do everything I can to never need one.
