You really have to listen to your body and learn. I am at stage 5 with egfr of 14. I drink bottled water and thT helps me to really keep track of intake. When I run out I drink water from the faucet. When using the faucet sometimes I don't keep track. I get a burning sensation in my kidney area to let me know I need more water. I relate it to a dried plant that needs watering. It works for me. I try not to let my plants get dry.

Pain in the kidney area is something many people with kidney disease experience. The kidneys sit just under the rib cage on either side of the spine, so pain in that region β€” especially on one side β€” can sometimes be related to kidney issues.

Common kidney-related causes of this kind of pain include:

- Kidney stones
- Infections
- Cysts (fluid-filled sacs)
- Blockages in the urinary system One-sided pain is worth mentioning to a nephrologist, especially if it comes and goes. It's also important to flag any other symptoms alongside the pain, such as:

- Changes in urination (frequency or appearance)
- Swelling
- Fever
- Nausea

These details can help a doctor figure out what's going on more quickly.

Pain that seems minor can sometimes signal something that's easier to treat when caught early, so don't hesitate to bring it up at the next appointment β€” or sooner if the pain gets worse.
