How long does it typically take to progress from CKD stage 3a to needing dialysis?

The timeline varies greatly from person to person, and many people with stage 3a CKD never progress to dialysis at all. Stage 3a means your eGFR is between 45-59, showing mild to moderate kidney damage. With proper management, it's possible to slow or even stop progression to more advanced stages.

The key factors that influence progression include:
* How well you manage underlying conditions like diabetes or high blood pressure
* Following a kidney-friendly diet
* Taking prescribed medications consistently
* Regular monitoring with your nephrologist
* Avoiding things that can harm your kidneys further

Some people remain stable at stage 3 for many years or even decades. Others may progress more quickly depending on the cause of their kidney disease and how well it's controlled. The good news is that stage 3 is when you can really make a difference through lifestyle changes and medical management.

Working closely with your healthcare team and taking action now gives you the best chance of protecting your kidney function for as long as possible.

Hey Billy Ray, I'm at 3a too, with my eGFR last being at 46 so I'm hovering close to 3b.
For me all of this has happened in a year and a half so I hope things slow down soon. I'm getting bloods taken at the end of the month so it will be interesting to see if that's changed any.

Try to stay positive πŸ™πŸ»

And one thing good about this site is we're getting it from people that are going through it and not just from doctors that just give us facts.

It could be years before you'll need dialysis. 3 years ago I was diagnosed with 3A and now I'm beginning of 4 my level is 29. So it could be even more years until I need dialysis.
